영국에 하나님께 크게 쓰임받았던 주님의 종 스펄전 씨가 있었습니다. 그는 일평생 아침 일찍 주님과 교통하는 것을 매우 중시하였습니다. 그는 “열심으로 주님을 사랑하는 사람은 아침에 하나님과 교통하는 것을 귀히 여깁니다.
그들에게 한 가지 규율이 있는데, 곧 먼저 하나님의 얼굴을 보지 않으면 결코 사람의 얼굴을 보지 않는 것입니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그로브즈 양은 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “주님을 얼마나 사랑하는가는 그가 침대와 주님 사이에 어느 것을 택하느냐를 보면 알 수 있습니다.
침대를 사랑한다면 잠을 더 많이 잘 것이고 주님을 더욱 사랑한다면 더 일찍 일어날 것입니다.” 그녀는 죽을 때까지 새벽 다섯 시 이후에 일어난 적이 하루도 없었습니다.
에베소서 4장 8절에서의 은사는 여러 가지 봉사를 위한 능력이나 자격들을 말하는 것이 아니라, 11절에 있는 각종 은사 있는 사람들-사도들, 신언자들, 복음 전파자들, 목자 및 교사들-을 말하는 것입니다. 그분 자신의 죽음과 부활을 통해 사탄과 죽음으로부터 그들을 정복하고 구출하신 후, 그리스도께서는 그분의 승천 안에서 구출된 죄인들인 그들 자신을 그분의 부활 생명으로 그러한 은사들이 되게 하셨고, 몸의 건축을 위해 그들을 그분의 몸에 주셨습니다. "땅 아래 낮은 곳"이란 땅 밑에 있는 음부를 말하는데, 그리스도께서 죽으신 후에 가셨던 곳입니다(행2:27).
그리스도께서는 먼저 그분의 육체 되심으로 하늘에서 땅으로 내려오셨습니다. 그리고 십자가에서 죽으신 후, 그분의 죽음 안에서 그분은 땅에서 음부로 더 내려가셨습니다. 결국 부활 안에서 그분은 음부로부터 땅으로 올라오셨으며, 승천 안에서 땅에서 하늘로 올라가셨습니다.
죽음 안에서 그분의 내려가심과 부활 안에서의 올라가심으로 그분은 사람들에게 은사를 주셨습니다. 내려오심과 올라가심으로 그리스도께서는 그분이 만물을 충만케 하실 수 있도록 길을 닦으셨습니다. 여기서의 사상은 심오합니다.
먼저 그리스도는 하늘들에 계셨습니다. 육체 되심 안에서 그분은 사람으로 땅에 내려오셨으며 삼십삼 년 반 동안 이 땅에 사셨습니다. 그 다음 그분은 십자가 위에서 죽으시고 음부로 내려가시고, 부활 안에서 음부로부터 땅으로 올라오셨으며, 그 다음 삼층천으로 승천하셨습니다.
내려오심과 올라가심의 그러한 왕래의 수단에 의해 그분은 만물을 충만케 하십니다. 이제 그리스도께서는 어디든지, 하늘 뿐 아니라 땅에도 계십니다. (출처 : 하단 영문 참조)
“Gifts” here does not refer to the abilities or enablements for varied services, but to the various gifted persons in verse 11 - apostles, prophets, evangelists, and shepherds and teachers. After conquering and rescuing them from Satan and death through His own death and resurrection, Christ in His ascension made the rescued sinners themselves such gifts with His resurrection life and gave them to His Body for its building up.
...The “lower parts of the earth” refers to Hades, underneath the earth, where Christ went after His death (Acts 2:27). Christ firstly descended from heaven to earth in His incarnation. Then after He died on the cross, in His death He descended further, from earth to Hades.
Eventually, in His resurrection He ascended from Hades to earth, and from earth to heaven in His ascension. By His descending in death and ascending in resurrection, He gave gifts to men. By descending and ascending, Christ also cut the way that He might fill all things.
The thought here is profound. Firstly, Christ was in the heavens. In His incarnation He came down to earth as a man and lived on earth for thirty-three and a half years.
Then He died on the cross and descended into Hades, ascended in resurrection from Hades to earth, and then ascended to the third heaven. By means of such a traffic of descending and ascending, He fills all things. Now Christ is everywhere, on the earth as well as in the heavens.
