오늘의 만나

골로새서에서 바울이 그가 다루고 있는 부정적인 것들 중에서 특히 심각하게 드러내는 것은 우상 숭배의 한 형태인 천사 숭배입니다. 하나님 외에 다른 어떤 것, 천사들과 같은 피조물 등을 숭배하는 것이 바로 우상 숭배입니다. 골로새에 사는 어떤 이단 교사들은 그들 자신을 하나님과 접촉할 수 없는 존재로 여기고 천사 숭배를 주장하였습니다. 그들은 하나님은 지극히 높은 분이지만 사람은 극히 천하고, 하나님은 영광스러운 분이지만 사람은 부패하였다고 가르쳤습니다. 그러므로 그들 이단의 가르침에 따르면 우리는 하나님을 직접 접촉할 자격이 없다는 것입니다. 그들의 말로는, 우리에게 어떤 중개자가 필요하며 천사들이 하나님과 사람 사이에 중개자가 된다는 것입니다. 이것이 골로새 교회에 침투된 천사 숭배의 뒤에 깔린 관념입니다. 어떤 사람들은 하나님을 직접 경배할 자격이 없다고 믿는 것을 겸손의 표시라고 생각합니다. 이단 교사들은 성도들을 권하여 이같은 천사 숭배를 함으로써 겸손을 보이라고 했습니다. 그들은 골로새 사람들에게 다음과 같이 말하는 것 같습니다. '여러분이 직접 하나님께 갈 수 있다고 생각하는 것은 너무나 교만한 것입니다. 여러분은 여러분 자신을 낮추어 여러분과 하나님 사이에 중재자로서 섬기는 천사들이 필요하다는 것을 알아야 합니다.' 그러나 바울은 그런 관념에 반대하며 싸우면서 다음과 같이 말했습니다. '아무도 겸손과 천사 숭배를 이유로 여러분의 상을 빼앗지 못하게 하십시오.'(골2:18, 원문참조) 우리는 어떤 사람들의 일부러 겸손함이나 천사 숭배에 대한 가르침에 휩쓸리지 말아야 합니다. (발췌문 : 하단 영문 참조)

Words of Ministry

In Colossians...of all the negative things that [Paul] deals with, one stands out as especially serious-the worship of angels, which is a form of idolatry. To worship anything other than God, including such creatures as angels, is idolatry. Nevertheless, because they regarded themselves and others as being unworthy to contact God directly, certain heretical teachers in Colosse advocated angel worship. They taught that God is very high and that we are very low, that God is glorious and that man is corrupt. Therefore, according to their heretical teaching, we could not be worthy to contact God directly. According to them, we must have some kind of intermediary. These teachers said that the angels are the intermediaries between us and God. This was the concept behind the angel worship that had invaded the church in Colosse. Some thought it was a sign of humility to believe that they were not worthy to worship God directly. The heretical teachers encouraged the saints to show humility by following this way of worship. It seems as if these teachers were telling those in Colosse, “You shouldn't be so proud as to think that you can go directly to God. You must humble yourselves and recognize your need of angels to serve as intermediaries between you and God.” Paul was fighting against such a concept when he said, "Let no one purposely defraud you of your prize, in humility and worship of the angels" (2:18). We should not be carried away by someone's humility or by a teaching regarding angel worship.
