하나님의 대적을 처리하고 어둠의 악한 세력에 대항하여 싸우려면, 그리스도를 죽은 사람들 가운데서 일으키시고, 공중의 모든 악한 영들보다 훨씬 높은 하늘에 앉히신 능력의 지극히 크심으로 강건케 되어야 합니다. 우리가 주님 안에서 그분의 강한 권능으로 굳세게 되어야 한다는 사실은 사탄과 그의 악한 왕국과 대항해서 싸우는 영적 전쟁에서 우리는 자신들 안에서가 아닌 주님 안에서만 싸울 수 있다는 것을 가리킵니다. 자신 안에 있을 때마다 우리는 패배하게 됩니다. 굳세게 되어야 한다는 것은 우리의 의지를 행사하는 것이 필요하다는 의미입니다. 우리가 영적 전쟁을 위해 강건해지려면 우리의 의지는 반드시 강해야 하며 훈련되어져야 합니다. 우리는 해파리같이 의지가 약하거나 흔들리는 사람들이 되어서는 안됩니다. 사실상 가장 잘 회개할 수 있는 사람은 강한 의지의 소유자들입니다. 우리의 양심을 보존하는 것과 더불어 하나님은 주권적으로 우리의 의지도 보존하셨습니다. 만일 그분이 그렇게 하지 않으셨다면 복음 전파가 사람들에게 영향을 줄 수 없었을 것입니다. 강한 의지를 갖고 있는 사람에게 복음을 전하는 것이 어렵다고 잘못 생각할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 나의 체험에 따르면 복음 전파로 구원받은 대부분의 사람들은 강한 의지와 분명한 의도를 가진 사람들이었습니다. 그러한 의지는 회개할 때 적극적으로 기능을 발휘할 수 있습니다. 회개는 의지의 훈련입니다. 마찬가지로 굳세게 되는 것도 우리의 의지와 관계됩니다.

  To deal with God's enemy, to fight against the evil force of darkness, we need to be empowered with the greatness of the power that raised up Christ from the dead and seated Him in the heavens, far above all the evil spirits in the air. The fact that we are to be empowered in the Lord indicates that in the spiritual warfare against Satan and his evil kingdom, we can fight only in the Lord, not in ourselves. Whenever we are in ourselves, we are defeated. The charge to be empowered implies the need to exercise our will. If we would be empowered for spiritual warfare, our will must be strong and exercised. We should not be like jellyfish, those who are weak-willed and vacillating. Actually, it is those with a strong will who are most able to repent.... In addition to preserving our conscience, God has sovereignly preserved our will. If He had not done so, the preaching of the gospel could have no effect on people. We may mistakenly think that it is difficult to preach the gospel to one with a strong will. According to my experience, most of those who were saved through my gospel preaching were those with a strong will and a definite intention. Such a will is able to function positively in repentance. Repentance requires the exercise of the will. In like manner, to be empowered also involves our will.
