성경과 공자의 가르침을 둘 다 잘 알고 있는 사람인 나는 많은 그리스도인들이 매일의 생활에서 마치 공자의 제자들인 것처럼 살고 있다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 종교적인 관념의 영향 아래서 그들은 성경을 교리나 윤리적인 가르침의 책으로 간주하고 있습니다. 예를 들어 어떤 자매가 자기 남편에게 순종하려고 필사적인 노력을 할지 모릅니다. 이렇게 하면서 그녀는 자신이 좋은 그리스도인라고 계속 믿고 있지만 사실상 공자의 제자처럼 살고 있는 것입니다. 우리는 모두 바울이 에베소서 5장 22절에서 자기 남편에게 순종하라고 아내들에게 권면한 것을 알고 있습니다. 그러나 이것은 영 안에서 충만케 되는 것에 관한 그의 말 뒤에 온다는 것을 잊지 말아야 합니다(엡5:18). 이는 아내의 순종함이 외적이거나 계획적인 시도에서가 아니라 그영의 내적 충만에서부터 나와야 함을 가리킵니다. 만일 자매의 순종이 참된 것이라면 계획적인 노력이 요구되지 않을 것입니다. 반대로 그녀는 그리스도에 대한 체험과 누림으로부터 자연스럽게 순종할 것입니다. 그녀는 그렇게 하려고 의도적으로 노력하지 않고 순종하기 때문에 자신이 순종하고 있다는 것을 깨닫지 못할 수도 있습니다. 이러한 순종은 그 자매 안에 분배된 그리스도의 요소에서 나옵니다. 이것은 그녀가 남편의 머리됨 아래 있어야 한다고 배웠기 때문에 순종하는 것과는 얼마나 다른 것입니까?

  As one who is familiar with both the Bible and the teachings of Confucius, I have come to realize that in their daily living many Christians live as if they were disciples of Confucius. Under the influence of the religious concept, they regard the Bible as a book of doctrines and ethical teachings. For example, a sister may try desperately to submit to her husband. In doing this, she is actually living like a follower of Confucius [since he taught the need for submission], all the while believing that she is being a good Christian.... We all know that in Ephesians 5:22 Paul exhorts the wives to be subject to their own husbands. But do not forget that this follows his word about being filled in spirit (v. 18). This indicates that a wife's submission should come out of the infilling of the Spirit [which is the essence of the Christian life], not out of an outward, deliberate attempt to be submissive. If a sister's submission is genuine, it will not require deliberate effort. On the contrary, she will submit spontaneously out of her experience of Christ and her enjoyment of Him. She may not even realize that she is submissive, for she submits without purposely trying to do so. Such submission comes out of the element of Christ that has been imparted into that sister. How different this is from submitting because she has been taught to be under the headship of her husband!
