에베소서 5장 26절의 "씻는 물"이라고 번역된 헬라어는 물두멍을 의미합니다. 구약의 제사장들은 물두멍에서 자신들을 땅의 더러움으로부터 씻었습니다(출30:18~21). 이제 그 씻는 물은 우리를 더러운 것에서 씻습니다. 그러므로 우리는 말씀 안에 있는 물두멍에 의해 깨끗케 됩니다. 우리는 날마다 아침 저녁으로 성경을 대하여 말씀 안에 있는 물두멍에 의해 깨끗케 되어야 합니다. 이렇게 말씀을 대함으로 우리는 세상과의 접촉에서 쌓인 더러운 것들로부터 깨끗케 됩니다. 여러분이 인생을 살면서 세상을 접촉할 때마다 여러분은 깨끗케 되기 위해 말씀을 대해야 합니다. 어느 날 니 형제님이 성경읽기에 대해 말하고 있었습니다. 어떤 자매가 자기는 기억력이 좋지 않아서 성경에서 읽은 것을 전부 잊어버린다고 말했습니다. 그 자매는 자기가 성경을 계속 읽는 것이 무슨 소용이 있겠느냐고 형제님에게 물었습니다. 니 형제님은 답변으로 중국 여인들이 버드나무로 만든 바구니에 쌀을 씻는 방법에 대해 말했습니다. 중국 여인들은 그 바구니를 여러 차례 물 속에 넣었다 건졌다를 반복합니다. 물에서 바구니를 꺼낼 때마다 모든 물이 바구니에서 새어나갑니다. 바구니에는 물이 남지 않더라도 쌀은 씻겨집니다. 니 형제님은 이 예화를 성경읽기에 적용했습니다. 비록 우리가 읽은 것이 아무것도 남아있지 않더라도 그 말씀에 의해 씻음을 받고 깨끗케 됩니다. 이제 우리도 용기를 얻어 계속 말씀을 접촉함으로 인하여 씻음 받읍시다.

  In Greek the word rendered washing in verse 26 means laver. In the Old Testament, the priests wash themselves from earthly defilement in the laver (Exo. 30:18-21). Now the washing of the water washes us from defilement. Therefore, we are cleansed by the laver of the water in the Word. ...Day by day, morning and evening, we need to come to the Bible and be cleansed by the laver of water in the Word. By coming to the Word in this way, we are cleansed from the defilement we have accumulated in our contact with the world. Whenever you contact the world in the course of your human living, you need to come to the Word to be cleansed. One day Brother Nee was speaking about Bible reading. A certain sister told him that she had a poor memory and forgot everything she read in the Word. She asked Brother Nee what was the purpose for her to go on reading the Bible. In his answer, Brother Nee spoke of the way women in China wash rice in a willow basket. They dip the basket in and out of the water a number of times. Every time they take the basket out of the water, all the water flows out of the basket. Nevertheless, although the basket retains no water, both the basket and the rice are washed. He then applied this illustration to the reading of the Word. Although we may not retain anything of what we read, we are washed by it nonetheless, and we are cleansed. Let us be encouraged to come to the Word again and again to be washed....
