에베소서 5장 26절의 물로 씻는 것은 그리스도의 구속의 피로 씻는 것과는 다릅니다. 구속하는 피는 우리의 죄를 씻어 주지만(요일1:7), 생명의 물은 그러한 "점이나 주름이나 그 같은 것들"과 같은 옛사람이 가진 천연적인 생명의 흠들을 씻어 버립니다. 교회를 거룩하게 하실 때 주님은 먼저 그분의 피로 우리 죄를 씻으시고 다음에 그분의 생명으로 우리의 천연적인 흠들을 씻으십니다. 교회가 거룩하고 흠없이 되기 위해 우리는 지금 그러한 씻는 과정 속에 있습니다. 창세기 2장에 있는 하와는 아직 타락하지 않았으므로 깨끗케 될 필요가 없었습니다. 오히려 그녀는 아무 섞임이 없이 순수했습니다. 그러나 오늘날 우리는 타락하여 오염되고 더렵혀졌기 때문에 깨끗케 될 필요가 있습니다. 우리에게 깨끗케 하는 것 없이 목양하심과 소중히 품으심만 있다면, 우리의 문제들은 그대로 남아 있을 것입니다. 주님의 목양하심과 소중히 품으심은 항상 그분의 깨끗케 하심으로 끝납니다. 깨끗케 하심에 의한 영적인 신진대사의 과정 안에서 우리 존재 안에 있는 "세균들"은 살균되며 소극적인 것들은 배설됩니다. 깨끗케 하심을 수반하는 목양하심과 소중히 품으심을 통해 우리는 건강하고 강해집니다. 영양공급이 그치면 깨끗케 하심도 그치게 됩니다. 그러나 우리가 영적인 공급을 계속 섭취한다면 우리 안으로 섭취한 성분들이 우리를 내적으로 깨끗이 씻어서 낡아있고 죽어있는 더러운 것들을 내보낼 것입니다. 이 신진대사의 과정이 교회생활 안에서 매일매일 일어납니다.

  The washing of such water is different from the washing of the redeeming blood of Christ. The redeeming blood washes away our sins (1 John 1:7), whereas the water of life washes away the blemishes of the natural life of our old man, such as “spot or wrinkle or any such things.” In sanctifying the church, the Lord firstly washes away our sins with His blood and then washes away our natural blemishes with His life. We are now in such a washing process in order that the church may be holy and without blemish. With Eve in Genesis 2 there was no need of cleansing because in that chapter she had not fallen. Rather, she was pure and without mixture. But because we are fallen, contaminated, and defiled, we today need to be cleansed.... If we had the nourishing and the cherishing [verse 29] without the cleansing, our problems would remain with us. The Lord's nourishing and cherishing always issue in His cleansing. In the process of spiritual metabolism brought about by the cleansing, the germs in our being are killed and the negative things are discharged. Through the nourishing and the cherishing with the cleansing, we become healthy and strong.... If the nourishment ceases, the cleansing will cease also. But if we continually take in the spiritual supply, the elements [of Christ] we absorb into our being will cleanse us inwardly and carry away the old, dead, and unclean things. This metabolic process is taking place day by day in the church life.
