아내는 반드시 남편을 머리로 취해야 합니다. 아내의 머리인 남편은 교회의 머리이신 그리스도를 상징합니다. 몸의 구주가 되신 것에 더하여 그리스도는 또한 교회의 머리입니다. 구주는 사랑의 문제인 반면 머리는 권위의 문제입니다. 우리는 그리스도를 우리의 구주로 사랑하지만 또한 우리의 머리로써 그분께 순종해야 합니다. 아내와 남편과의 관계에 있어서도 그러해야 합니다. 바울은 남편들에게 자기 아내를 사랑하라고 권면합니다. 순종의 반대는 지배입니다. 그런데 사도는 남편에게 아내를 지배하라는 것이 아니라 사랑하라고 권면합니다. 결혼생활에서 아내의 의무는 순종이며 남편의 의무는 사랑입니다. 아내의 순종에 남편의 사랑을 더한 것은 합당한 결혼생활을 영위하며, 교회가 그리스도께 순종하고 그리스도는 교회를 사랑하는 정상적인 교회생활을 예표합니다. 아내에 대한 남편의 사랑은 교회에 대한 그리스도의 사랑과도 같아야 합니다. 이는 남편이 자기 아내를 위해 자신을 주어야 한다는 의미입니다. 남편에 대한 요구는 아내에 대한 것보다 한층 무겁습니다. 어떤 사람에게 순종하는 것은 그 사람에게 자신을 주는 것만큼 어렵지 않습니다. 자신을 준다는 것은 순교자가 되는 것이요, 자신의 삶을 희생하는 것입니다. 남편들은 그러한 대가를 치르면서 아내를 사랑해야 합니다. 그들은 기꺼이 큰 대가를 치뤄야 하며 심지어는 아내를 위해 죽기까지 해야 합니다.

  ...Wives must also take their husbands as the head. As head of the wife, a husband typifies Christ as the Head of the church. In addition to being the Savior of the Body, Christ is also the Head of the church. The Savior is a matter of love, whereas the Head is a matter of authority. We love Christ as our Savior, but we must also be subject to Him as our Head. It ought to be the same in the relationship between wives and husbands. Paul exhorts the husbands to love their wives. The opposite of subjection is ruling. However, the apostle does not exhort the husbands to rule over the wives, but to love them. In married life, the wife's obligation is subjection and the husband's, love. The wife's subjection plus the husband's love constitutes proper married life and typifies the normal church life, in which the church is subject to Christ and Christ loves the church. A husband's love for his wife must be like Christ's love for the church. This means that a husband ought to give himself up for his wife. The requirement for the husband is much heavier than that for the wife. Submitting to someone is not as difficult as giving yourself up for someone. To give yourself up is to be a martyr, to sacrifice your life. Husbands are to love their wives at such a cost to themselves. They must be willing to pay a great price, even to die for their wives.
