사람은 구원받은 후, 깊은 속에서부터 주 예수님이 세우신 본에 따른 삶을 살고자 하는 갈망이 있습니다. 그러나 많은 사람들이 이런 갈망을 무시하거나 자신의 노력으로 그분을 닮는데 성공할 수 있다고 생각하면서 잘못된 방법으로 개발합니다. 우리의 천연적인 생명을 훈련함으로 그리스도를 닮을 수 있다고 생각하는 것은 잘못된 것입니다. 우리 중 많은 사람들이 사복음서가 우리에게 미친 영향을 깨닫지 못하는 것 같습니다. 우리가 복음서에서 주 예수님이 세우신 모형(본)을 읽을 때, 그 모형은 자연히 우리 삶에 영향을 줍니다. 우리가 주님을 사랑하고 그분을 접촉하고 기도할 때 자동적으로 복음서들 안에 기술된 모형대로 그분을 살게 됩니다. 이렇게 하여 우리는 이 모형의 형상에 따라 모양지어지고 본받게 됩니다. 이것이 그리스도를 배운다는 의미입니다. 이렇게 그리스도를 배우는 것은 그분을 객관적인 본으로 취하거나 우리의 천연적인 생명 안에서 그분을 닮으려고 노력하는 것과는 전적으로 다릅니다. 하나님이 우리를 이 땅에서 예수의 삶에 의해 형성된 모형 안으로 넣으시는 동시에 생명주는 영이신 그리스도는 우리 존재 안에 생명으로 들어오셨습니다. 우리가 그분을 사랑하고 접촉하면 할수록 우리는 더욱 이 모형대로 그분을 살 수 있습니다. 그 결과 우리는 자연히 그 모형의 형상을 본받게 됩니다. 그러므로 우리는 바울과 같이 "나에게 있어서 삶은 그리스도이고(빌1:21)"라고 말할 수 있습니다. 우리는 그분 자신의 삶의 형태, 즉 복음서들 안에 기록된 형태 안에서 그리스도를 삽니다.

  After a person is saved, deep within him he desires to live a life in the pattern established by the Lord Jesus. However, many either ignore this desire or cultivate it in a mistaken way, thinking that by self-effort they can succeed in imitating Him. It is a mistake to think that we can imitate Christ by the exercise of our natural life. Not many of us may realize the influence the four Gospels have on us. When we read in the Gospels of the mold [pattern] formed by the Lord Jesus, that mold spontaneously influences our living. As we love the Lord, contact Him, and pray to Him, we automatically live Him according to the mold described in the Gospels. In this way we are shaped, conformed, to the image of this mold. This is what it means to learn Christ. Learning Christ in this way is altogether different from taking Him as an objective example and endeavoring in our natural life to imitate Him. God has put us into the mold formed by the life of Jesus on earth. Simultaneously, Christ as the life-giving Spirit has come into our being as life. The more we love Him and contact Him, the more we live Him according to this mold. As a result, we are spontaneously conformed to the image of that mold. Therefore, with Paul we can say, “For to me to live is Christ” (Phil. 1:21). We live Christ in the form of His own life, in the form recorded in the Gospels.
