이방인들은 "하나님의 생명에서 떠나" 있었습니다. 이 생명은 피조되지 않은 하나님의 영원한 생명이며, 사람이 창조될 때 받은 것이 아닙니다. 창조 후, 피조된 인간의 생명을 가진 사람이 피조되지 않은 신성한 생명을 받기 위해 생명나무 앞에 놓여져 있었습니다(창2:8~9). 그러나 사람은 그 생각의 공허함 안으로 타락했고 무지하게 되었습니다. 그런 타락된 상태 속에서 사람이 하나님께 돌이켜진 생각을 갖기 전 즉 하나님의 영원한 생명을 받기 위해 회개하고 주 예수님을 믿기 전에는 하나님의 생명을 접촉할 수 없었습니다. 하나님이 사람을 창조하신 의도는 사람이 생명나무의 열매를 먹음으로 하나님의 영원한 생명을 받게 하려는 것이었습니다. 그러나 타락으로 사탄의 악한 본성이 사람 안에 주입되었습니다. 그 결과 사람은 생명나무에서 쫓겨나게 되었습니다. 창세기 3장 24절에 따르면, 여호와께서 "이와 같이 사람을 쫓아내시고 에덴 동산 동편에 그룹들과 두루 도는 화염검을 두어 생명나무의 길을 지키게" 하셨습니다. 이처럼 사람은 하나님의 생명에서 떠나 있었습니다. 그룹과 화염과 검은 하나님의 영광과 성결과 공의를 상징합니다. 이 세 가지 것들은 죄있는 사람으로 하여금 영원한 생명을 받지 못하게 막고 있었습니다. 그러나 주 예수님이 십자가 위에서 죽으셨을 때, 하나님의 영광과 성결과 공의의 모든 요구를 이루셨습니다. 그러므로 주 예수님의 구속을 통해 우리가 생명나무를 접할 수 있는 길이 다시 한번 열리게 되었습니다.

 The nations are also “alienated from the life of God”. This life is the uncreated, eternal life of God, which man did not receive at the time of creation. After being created, man with the created human life was placed before the tree of life (Gen. 2:8-9) to receive the uncreated divine life. But man fell into the vanity of his mind and became darkened in his understanding. In such a fallen condition, man is not able to touch the life of God until he has his mind turned to God, until he repents and believes in the Lord Jesus to receive God's eternal life. God's intention in His creation of man was that man would partake of the fruit of the tree of life and thereby receive the eternal life of God. But in the fall, Satan's evil nature was injected into man. As a result, man had to be barred from the tree of life. According to Genesis 3:24, the Lord “drove out the man: and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” Thus, man was estranged from the life of God. The cherubim, the flame, and the sword signify God's glory, holiness, and righteousness. These three things kept sinful man from receiving eternal life. When the Lord Jesus died on the cross, He fulfilled all the requirements of God's glory, holiness, and righteousness. Therefore, through the redemption of the Lord Jesus, the way has been opened for us to contact the tree of life once more.
