우리가 허물과 죄들 가운데서 죽어 있을 때, 우리는 또한 육체의 정욕을 따라, 육체의 욕구뿐만 아니라 생각의 욕구를 따라 행했습니다. 세 가지 악한 것들, 즉 우리 밖에 있는 이 세상의 세대와 우리 위와 우리 안에 있는 공중 권세의 주관자와 우리 타락한 본성 안에 있는 육체의 욕구가 우리의 생활을 지배했습니다. 그러나 이 악한 것들로부터 구원받아 우리는 그리스도의 몸이 되었습니다. 우리가 구원받기 전에 우리는 모두 우리의 육체와 생각이 원하는대로 하면서 육체의 정욕을 따라 행했습니다. 에베소서 2장 3절의 "욕구대로"는 우리가 좋아하는 것을 언급합니다. 과거에 우리는 단지 좋아하기 때문에 어떤 것들을 했습니다. 우리가 춤추는 것을 좋아했다면 춤추러 갔을 것입니다. 운동 경기를 좋아했다면 운동 경기를 보러 갔을 것입니다. 오늘날 젊은 세대는 역사상의 어느 세대들보다도 그들이 좋아하는 것을 합니다. 여러분이 젊은이들에게 왜 그런 것을 하냐고 묻는다면, 많은 이들이 단지 좋아하기 때문이라고 말할 것입니다. 이것은 죽은 사람의 표시입니다. 무엇이든지 좋아하는 것을 행하는 오늘날의 많은 젊은이들은 브레이크 없는 자동차와 같습니다. 얼마나 위험한지요! 불순종의 아들들이었던 우리는 또한 진노의 자녀이기도 했습니다. 사망의 영역에서 우리는 불순종으로 인하여 하나님의 진노 아래 있었습니다. 그러나 우리는 불순종으로부터 그리고 하나님의 진노로부터 구원받았습니다.

  ...When we were dead in our offenses and sins, we also behaved according to the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires not only of the flesh but also of the thoughts. Three evil things, the age of this world outside of us, the ruler of the aerial authority above and within us, and the lusts of our flesh in our fallen nature, dominated our life. From these evil things we have been saved to become the Bod y of Christ. Before we were saved, we all behaved ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, doing whatever the flesh and the thoughts liked to do. The word “desires” in verse 3 refers to our likes. In the past, we did certain things simply because we liked to do them. If we liked to go dancing, we went dancing. If we liked to attend sporting events, we attended them... Today's young generation, probably more than any generation in history, does whatever it likes. If you ask the young people why they do certain things, many of them would answer that they simply like to do them. This is a sure sign of a dead person. In doing whatever they like, many of today's young people are like cars without brakes. How dangerous this is! We, as the sons of disobedience, were also the children of wrath. In the realm of death we were under God's wrath because of our disobedience. But we have been saved both from our disobedience and from God's wrath.
