하나님이 우리를 기뻐하시고 또한 우리를 그분의 은혜의 대상으로 삼으셨지만, 하나님은 의로우신 분이므로 우리에게는 여전히 구속이 필요합니다. 우리를 기뻐하시는 우리 아버지는 의로우신 분이며, 불의나 그릇된 행위나 허물을 용납하실 수 없는 분이십니다. 그러한 것들은 하나님의 의로우심에 대한 모독입니다. 하나님은 사랑의 하나님만이 아닌 공의의 하나님이시므로 의롭지 않은 것은 그 어떤 것도 그분을 기쁘시게 할 수 없습니다. 이것이 바로 그분의 사랑하는 아들 주 예수님께서 십자가에 달려 하나님의 택하신 무리를 위해 완전한 구속을 이루신 이유입니다. 그분의 피를 통한 아들의 구속은 우리의 허물들을 사하신 것입니다. 구속은 그리스도께서 우리의 허물들을 위하여 이루어 놓은 것이며, 죄사함은 그리스도께서 이루어 놓은 것을 우리의 허물들에게 적용시킨 결과입니다. 구속은 십자가에서 성취된 것이며, 죄사함은 우리가 그리스도를 믿는 순간 적용되는 것입니다. 구속과 사함은 사실상 한 사실의 양면입니다. 구속은 그리스도께서 피를 흘리셨을 때 십자가에서 성취된 것이지만, 그때 우리에게 적용된 것은 아닙니다. 우리가 그리스도를 믿고 의로우신 하나님께 회개할 때, 하나님의 영이 그리스도께서 십자가에서 성취하신 구속을 우리에게 적용시킵니다.

  Although God delights in us and has made us the objects of His grace, we still need redemption because He is the righteous God. Our Father who delights in us is righteous and cannot tolerate unrighteousness, wrongdoings, or offenses. Such things insult His righteousness. God is not only a God of love; He is also righteous, and anything unrighteous displeases Him. This is the reason that, in order to please God, the beloved Son [Jesus Christ] had to go to the cross to accomplish full redemption for God's chosen ones. The Son's redemption through His blood is the forgiveness of our offenses. Redemption is what Christ has accomplished for our offenses; forgiveness is what Christ accomplished applied to our offenses. Redemption was accomplished on the cross, whereas forgiveness is applied the moment we believe in Christ. Redemption and forgiveness are actually two ends of one thing... Although redemption was accomplished on the cross when Christ shed His blood, it was not applied to us at that time. The application did not take place until we believed in Christ and made confession to the righteous God. At that very moment, the Spirit of God applied to us the redemption Christ had accomplished on the cross.
