골로새서 1장 5절의 문맥에 따르면 하늘에 소망을 쌓아두는 것은 우리가 오늘날 어떻게 사는 것과 아주 큰 관련이 있습니다. 어떤 형제가 국적이 어떠하든, 문화적 배경이 어떠하든 모든 성도들을 사랑한다고 해봅시다. 반대로 다른 어떤 형제는 성도들을 그의 취향과 선호에 따라 선택적으로 사랑한다고 해봅시다. 주 예수님께서 오실 때 어떤 형제가 더 큰 소망을 가지겠습니까? 물론 그것은 모든 성도들을 사랑하는 형제일 것입니다. 이것은 그리스도께서 우리에게 얼마나 큰 소망이 될 것인가는 우리가 오늘 그리스도를 얼마나 살아내는가에 달려 있다는 것을 가리킵니다. 예를 들어 만일 당신이 버는 돈의 일정량을 은행에 저축한다면 당신의 은행 구좌에 어느 정도의 저축이 쌓이게 될 것입니다. 그러나 만일 당신이 돈을 버는 데 실패하고 은행에 저축할 것이 전혀 없다면 당신을 위한 저축은 전혀 없게 될 것입니다. 같은 원칙으로 우리를 위해 하늘에 쌓이는 '소망의 양'은 우리가 그리스도를 얼마나 많이 살아내느냐에 달려 있습니다. 우리는 우리의 소망이신 분으로 인해 편견 없이 성도들을 사랑하는 이들이 되어야 할 필요가 있습니다. 그러한 생활은 우리를 위해 하늘에 소망을 쌓는 것입니다. 이 서신에서 바울은 이렇게 말하고 있는 것 같습니다. '사랑스러운 골로새인들이여, 여러분은 그리스도에 의해 살 필요가 있습니다. 어느 날 우리의 생명이신 그리스도께서 영광 가운데 나타나실 것입니다. 현재로서는 여러분도, 그리스도도 하나님 안에 감추어져 있습니다. 그분은 여러분의 내적 생명이십니다. 그러나 그분이 영광 가운데 나타나시면 여러분 또한 그분과 함께 나타날 것입니다.' (발췌 : 하단 영문 참조)

According to the context [of Colossians 1:5] , the laying up of hope in the heavens has a great deal to do with how we live today. Suppose a certain brother loves all the saints, no matter what their nationality or cultural background may be. Another brother, on the contrary, loves the saints selectively, according to his taste and preference. When the Lord Jesus comes, which brother will have the greater hope? Certainly it will be the one who loves all the saints. This indicates that how much hope Christ will be to us depends on our living Christ today. For example, if you deposit a certain amount of the money you earn in the bank, some savings will be laid up for you in your bank account. But if you fail to earn money and have nothing to deposit in the bank, there will be no savings laid up for you. In the same principle, the amount of hope that is being laid up for us in the heavens depends on how much we are living Christ. We need to be those who love the saints without partiality because of the One who is our hope. Such a living is the laying up for ourselves of hope in the heavens. In this Epistle Paul seemed to be saying, 'Dear Colossians...You need to live by Christ. One day, Christ who is our life will appear in glory. At present, both you and Christ are hidden in God. He is your inner life. But He will appear in glory, and you will appear with Him.'
