다른 사람이 우리를 책망할 때 우리는 인내할 수 있을 것입니다. 다른 사람이 우리를 핍박할 때 우리는 반박하는 말을 하지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 인내하면서 입을 다무는 것으로는 충분하지 않습니다. 만일 우리가 단지 인내하고 입을 다문다면, 우리는 이미 패배한 것입니다. 세상 사람도 인내하고 입을 다물 수 있습니다. 불교의 스님들도 그렇게 할 수 있고, 공자를 가르치는 학자들도 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 그들과 달라야 합니다. 다른 이들이 우리를 책망할 때, 우리는 '주님을 찬미하고 감사합니다.'라고 말할 수 있어야 합니다. 우리는 다른 이들이 우리를 책망하는 것을 기쁨으로 여겨야 합니다. 다른 이들이 우리를 핍박할 때 우리는 주님께 감사하고 찬미해야 하며, 이것을 기쁨의 문제로 여겨야 합니다. 만일 우리의 승리가 참된 승리라면, 우리는 기뻐하고 기뻐해야 합니다. 만일 승리가 단지 책망을 견디는 것을 의미한다면 그것은 다만 사람의 일에 불과합니다. 사람의 일의 결과는 다만 억제일 뿐이고, 반면에 모든 주님의 일의 결과는 기쁨과 환희입니다. 만일 우리가 아직 기쁨을 얻지 못한다면, 바울은 우리에게 기뻐하라고 한 번 더 반복할 것입니다. 하나님께서 주시는 생명은 기쁨의 생명입니다. 기뻐하는 것은 그리스도인의 매일의 생활입니다. 환란과 시련이 있을 수도 있으나 여전히 기쁨이 있어야 합니다. 기쁨의 반대는 염려하는 것입니다. 많은 사람들이 자녀, 물질, 사업으로 인해 염려합니다. 그러나 주님의 말씀은 '아무 것에도 염려하지 말고'(빌4:6)라고 말합니다. 우리는 염려가 정당하다고 생각하나, 주님은 '아무 것에도 염려하지 말라'고 말합니다. 이것은 우리가 항상 기뻐해야 하기 때문입니다. When others reproach us, we may endure it; when they persecute us, we may not speak back. But enduring and shutting up are not enough. If we only endure and shut up, we are already defeated. The world can endure and shut up as well. The [Buddhist] monks can do the same, and so can the scholars of Confucius. We should be different from them. When others reproach us, we should be able to say, “Praise and thank the Lord.” We should consider it a joy that others reproach us. When others persecute us, we should thank and praise the Lord and consider this a matter of joy. If our victory is a genuine victory, we should rejoice and exult. If victory merely means suffering reproach, it is just human work. Human work results in suppression, while every work of the Lord results in joy and exultation. ...If we did not get it yet, he [Paul] would repeat it once more?that we should rejoice. The life that God gives is a life of joy. Rejoicing is the daily life of a Christian. There may be tribulations and trials, but there is still rejoicing. The opposite of rejoicing is being anxious. Many people are anxious for their children, their money, or their business. But the Word of the Lord says, “In nothing be anxious” (Phil. 4:6). We think that anxiety is justified, but the Lord says, “In nothing be anxious.” This is because we should always rejoice.
