15 첫째로 우리가 알아야 할 것은 기뻐하는 것이 주님의 명령이라는 것입니다. 성경은 단지 우리에게 행복하라고 말하지 않고 주 안에서 기뻐하라고 명령하고 있습니다. 우리는 주님 안에서 기뻐해야 할 뿐 아니라, 그분 안에서 항상 그러해야 합니다. 아마도 여러분은 "나에게는 이렇고 이런 문제가 있는데 어떻게 기뻐할 수 있단 말인가? 노동자인 나는 가족을 부양해야만 한다. 내가 수고하고 땀흘리더라도 나는 돈도 많이 벌지 못하고 생활비는 너무나 많이 들어 가는데 내가 어떻게 기뻐할 수 있단 말인가?" 라고 말할지도 모릅니다. 결과적으로 여러분은 근심하게 됩니다. 여러분은 학생일 수도 있고 의사일 수도 있으며 주인이나 종일 수도 있습니다. 여러분은 세상에서 다른 사람들과 관계를 갖는다는 것이 어렵다고 느낍니다. 여러분은 기뻐할 수 없을 것이고 참으로 많은 것들이 여러분들로 하여금 기뻐하지 못하도록 합니다. 하지만 4절은 여러분 안에서 기뻐하는 것이 아니라 항상 주 안에서 기뻐하라고 말한다는 것을 명심하십시오. 하나님은 우리의 환경 안에서나, 우리 가는 길에 있는 것들로나 혹은 어떤 행복한 경우에서 기뻐하라고 명하신 것이 아닙니다.15

15 세상은 아마도 우리를 대적하고, 오해하고, 압박하고, 덫에 걸리게 할 것입니다. 하지만 어느 것도 우리에게서 하늘을 가릴 수는 없습니다. 주님은 결코 변하시지 않습니다. 우리는 이 한 가지에 대해 분명해야 합니다. 우리의 환경 안에서 기뻐하는 것이 아니라 주 안에서 기뻐하라는 것입니다. 친구나 친척들이 떠나고 마음이 아프고 슬프겠지만, 우리가 사랑하고 우리를 사랑하시는 주님을 바라본다면 우리는 위안을 얻고 기뻐하게 될 것입니다. 그분은 충분히 우리의 마음을 만족케 하십니다. 하지만 그리스도인들은 이것을 자주 잊어버립니다. 우리는 오늘 이런 말씀을 듣지만 내일은 잊어버릴 지도 모릅니다. 이러하기에 바울이 다시 말하고 있습니다. 내가 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라. 하나님의 의도는 우리가 기뻐하는 것입니다. 그러므로 무슨일이 일 어나든지 우리는 기뻐해야 합니다.15

15 Always Rejoicing15

15 The first thing we have to know is that rejoicing is a commandment of God. The Bible commands us not to be happy, but to rejoice in the Lord. We should not only rejoice in the Lord, but rejoice in Him always. Perhaps you may think, "I have such and such a problem. How can I rejoice? I am a laborer and have to support a family. Even though I toil and sweat, I do not earn much in wages, and living expenses are so high. How can I rejoice?" As a result, you may become anxious. Perhaps you are a student, doctor, master, or servant, and you feel that it is difficult to deal with other people in the world. You cannot rejoice. Indeed, many things can make you unable to rejoice. But please note that the rejoicing in verse 4 is not to rejoice in yourself, but to 15 "Rejoice in the Lord always." God has not asked us to rejoice in our environment, in things going our way, or in any kind of happiness. 15

15 The world may oppose us, misunderstand us, reject us, and trap us, but no one can cover the heavens from us. The Lord never changes. We should be clear about one thing: do not rejoice in the environment; rather, rejoice in our Lord. When friends and relatives are away and the heart is aching and 15 weeping, we can be comforted and rejoice if we look to the Lord who loves us and whom we love. He is enough to satisfy our heart. But Christians are very forgetful! We may hear about this today but forget about it tomorrow! This is why Paul followed by saying, "Again I will say, rejoice." God's intention is that we rejoice. Therefore, whatever happens, we must rejoice. 15
